The Lytics in Practice Scholarship is available to
second-year Emergency Medicine Residents* who have an interest
in learning how to optimize outcomes in patients who present
to the Emergency Department with Acute Myocardial Infarction,
Acute Ischemic Stroke, Pulmonary Embolism, and/or Occluded Catheters.
The program also involves Junior Faculty from the Residents’
institutions to facilitate and extend the learning.
The goal of this program is to address the important issues
regarding lytic therapy in a balanced, academically rigorous
manner. Lytics in Practice is an evidence-based educational
initiative that will enable participants to:
 |
 |
 |
Identify the key elements necessary for the critical
diagnosis of thrombotic emergencies (Acute Myocardial
Infarction, Acute Ischemic Stroke, Pulmonary Embolism,
Occluded Catheters), and the key potential contraindications
to lytic use |
 |
Discuss the safety and efficacy of lytics for these
emergencies, and understand the role of alternative and
complementary therapies |
 |
Understand the role of lytic therapy in critical time-to-treatment
thresholds in order to impact clinical outcomes |
 |
Engage with nationally recognized leaders in Emergency
Medicine |
 |
Teach others about the appropriate treatment of thrombotic
emergencies |
Participants will also be provided with a CD-ROM containing
multimedia materials suitable for use at residency lectures,
grand rounds, and potential community educational opportunities.
All materials have been developed by the nationally
recognized faculty identified in this Web site.
The Scholarship for Emergency Medicine Residents includes:
 |
 |
 |
A one-day workshop held on Sunday, October 26, prior to the beginning of the ACEP 2008 Scientific Assembly, taught by select
members of the Lytics in Practice faculty |
 |
Airfare to Chicago, Illinois, site of ACEP 2008, from the closest major airport
to their home |
 |
Accommodations for 3 nights |
 |
Registration fee to the ACEP 2008 Scientific Assembly |
Participation in the workshop is required in order to receive
scholarship funds for airfare, accommodations, and registration
at ACEP 2008.
Residency Directors may identify a Junior Faculty member from
their institutions to accompany the Resident to the Lytics
in Practice workshop (this is encouraged but not a requirement
for Resident eligibility). Participating Junior Faculty will
use their real world experience in managing thrombotic emergencies
to facilitate discussions between Residents during the workshop
and join in the panel discussion that concludes the workshop.
Junior Faculty who participate in the program will be reimbursed
for their travel and
2 nights accommodations in Chicago.
A professional Speaker Trainer will provide an overview on "How to Make an Effective
Presentation." Key points from the Lytics in Practice program will be specifically addressed. This training is designed
to enhance Residents’ presentation skills.
The Lytics in Practice Scholarship administrators
will make all travel and hotel arrangements for program participants.
Travel and hotel stays must take place around the dates of
ACEP 2008 Scientific Assembly. Accommodations will be
selected by the administrators.
